Wallabi's Farm: The English Hototogisu Bakery and Farm Blog

Hello, my name is Sara. In 2005 my husband and I bought an old farmhouse in Okayama, borrowed a few fields and set to building ourselves a pleasant rural life. Now, several years on, we have fields a-plenty, a bakery and have incorporated our efforts, along with those of some friends, into Hototogisu Bakery and Farm. Welcome!

Updating Hototogisu News

Amazing how time flies. I was looking over the Hototogisu webpage and realized the most recent update starts with something like "spring is here!" Oops. So, here goes with something a bit more up-to-date.

August will be over soon. Whew! Summer always wears me out - the heat, the bugs, the humidity - and I am looking forward to fall. In fact, with rain and clouds in the forecast for the next week, fall may well be here already. That said, it was a nice summer, and we are now reveling in the fruits of our agricultural labors. We have blueberries and tomatoes and watermelons and squashes and corn and edamame. The chickens are still a-laying and the chicks are all but grown up.

We have big changes in store for the fall: Shuzo will be going back into the bakery as the baker-in-charge, and he will be joined by an assistant baker (who I like very much - I am looking forward to working together!). With Shuzo in the bakery we will be returning to some of our old favorite recipes, including the 100% sourdough, and adding in something yummy with a high percentage of our own home-grown, stone-ground whole wheat. Exciting, and tasty, times to come!
